Surroundings and activities

Gran Hotel Ciudad de Barbastro is in the perfect spot for discovering the best of Somontano and the Aragonese Pyrenees.

Somontano, a natural paradise

Parque Natural de la Sierra y los Cañones de Guara is one of the largest areas protected as a natural park in Aragon and is renowned worldwide for its spectacularly deep canyons sculpted by its rivers, rain and air. It holds the perfect spots to feel the freedom of canyoning and rock-climbing, road or mountain biking and hiking.

Our historic legacy

In addition to its extraordinarily varied landscape, Somontano enjoys a rich historical heritage. A mountain ridge nestled deep in the sierra is the site of an amazing set of World Heritage pre-historic cave drawings. The whole region is scattered with beautiful architecture ranging in style from Romanesque to Baroque and lovely city centres that transport us back in time.

In body and in soul

The Marian Route is a voyage that blends culture and devotion, art and spirituality, nature and introspection. These brethren sanctuaries present pilgrims and travellers with unique collections of monuments and art that believers and world heritage lovers alike traverse the route to see.

Gastronomy and oenology

Wine tourism opportunities along the route invite the traveller to sense the magic of wine amongst the numerous approaches to and activities available in association with Somontano’s driving force and lifeblood: wine. Experience wineries where excellence itself ripens in the cellars that serve as the nursery beds for wines with history and traditional flavours along with wines that are modern and majestic jewels of avant-garde design; rest and relax in fantastic accommodations and bask in the pleasure of an exquisite spread shared across an intimate table with an exquisite wine at its centre.

Ever since the historic city of Barbastro’s founding during the 10th century, it has taken on the role of capital of Somontano. Its geographical location has seen it develop into an administrative capital devoted to commerce, a status it has maintained from that day since.

Nestled within the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara natural park, this is currently the primary point of interest visited by tourists who come to explore this attractive park.
A walk through its streets is nothing less than a stroll into the past, a parade of sights before our eyes, such as the great gateway through which one entered the city, the magnificent Plaza Mayor, the Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, the Iglesia Parroquial church, and the Virgen de las Nieves hermitage.

Aragonese Pyrenees

The Pyrenees mountains are one of Aragon’s most precious treasures. Its spectacular landscapes with snow-topped peaks, breath-taking cascades, crystal-clear waters and lovely scenic points make the Pyrenees an ideal setting for discovery.
